About
Me
Karen's passion for working in clay started at high school and after becoming an art teacher, she particularly enjoyed teaching ceramics to her students. Now Karen creates sculptural ceramics and teaches in her Dawson Creek studio in Highvale in the Samford Valley just outside of Brisbane.

Clay provides a medium that connects Karen with the natural environment and her artworks are often inspired by a sense of place; sometimes derived from childhood experiences of playing in creeks and the bush of Ferny Grove and Samford.

Karen's father was a landscape gardener, who designed many beautiful gardens in Brisbane. During the 1970s, Karen sometimes traced his plans for him and this influenced her plan like views of landscape in her designs.
The carved and textured surfaces of these works can also be read as a metaphor for the life experiences that batter us but can also provide a catalyst for change and transformation.
